In 2020, Earth's magnetic poles vanished, unleashing cosmic radiation that nearly destroyed humanity. Within a century, surviving creatures mutated into xenogenics that preyed upon one another, while tens of thousands of humans barely persisted in artificial bases. In the Abyss, among these mutated creatures, dwelled a sentient mushroom nourished by the blood and flesh of deceased human An Ze. This nourishment allowed it to assume human form and adopt a similar name: An Zhe. Driven to recover a spore harvested by humans, An Zhe infiltrates a human base while concealing his true nature. He must evade the Judges—inspectors tasked with detecting and eliminating xenogenics. Colonel Lu Feng stands as the most perceptive and ruthless Judge, executing anyone identified as non-human without hesitation. Yet An Zhe's mutation remains undetected by Lu Feng's scrutiny, setting in motion a complex narrative between humans and xenogenics. This work won the Silver Award at the 12th Chinese Nebula Awards for Chinese Science Fiction.
