Tang Yan, raised in her uncle’s rural home after an out-of-wedlock birth with an unknown father, achieves a coveted spot at Huadu University through her own efforts. Upon graduation from high school, her uncle's family no longer supports her, and her mother, now remarried, finds it inconvenient to house her. Tang Yan's mother entrusts her to a woman named Aunt Ji, described as someone who had previously helped her, to aid Tang Yan’s adjustment to city life. After a lengthy, sweltering train journey, Tang Yan is met by a sophisticated, elegantly dressed woman who warmly introduces herself as Aunt Ji, encouraging Tang Yan to call her as such, as she is of the same generation as Tang Yan’s mother. Despite an initial timidity stemming from the unfamiliar city and her new living situation, Tang Yan's entry into Aunt Ji's home and her calling her "Aunt Ji" ultimately binds her to a lifelong entanglement.
